TALLCREE TRIBAL GOVERNMENT

 For Tallcree people, the land is our home, our history, and our future. The forests, rivers, and lakes provide food, medicine, and resources, and are an important part of our culture and identity. Our ancestors taught us to respect and care for the land, and those values continue to guide us today. Protecting the land helps ensure future generations will always have a place to hunt, gather, learn, and stay connected to who we are.

What We Do

The Lands and Natural Resources Department works to monitor, protect, and manage Tallcree traditional territory. Our team supports the Nation through land use monitoring, mapping projects, environmental studies, and community engagement. We work to protect important cultural areas, wildlife, and natural resources while ensuring Tallcree’s voice is included in decisions about our territory.

Current Focus Areas

Our work is guided by priorities that keep the land and water healthy for future generations:

  • Forestry and land management: supporting the careful use of resources while keeping forests strong.
  • Water protection: safeguarding rivers, lakes, and wetlands that provide drinking water and fish habitat.
  • Wildlife monitoring: tracking the health and movements of animals for balanced ecosystems.
  • Traditional Land Use (TLU) mapping: recording sacred sites, family use areas, and traditional place names.
  • Environmental monitoring and studies: assessing outside activity and guiding responsible land management.
  • Consultation and permitting: ensuring proposed projects on Tallcree land respect our Nation’s values and rights.
  • Community engagement: creating opportunities for members to share knowledge and report concerns.

 

An interactive map will soon be available online, showing traditional land use areas, forest cover, water systems, and access routes. A report a concern button will give community members an easy way to notify the Lands team about issues they see on the land.

Community Involvement and Stewardship

Protecting the land is a responsibility we all share. Elders contribute stories, teachings, and insights that guide our work, while youth are encouraged to take part in land-based learning activities, workshops, and camps. These programs create space for knowledge sharing and help ensure traditional practices continue. Through language, oral history, and cultural education, Tallcree members of all ages remain connected to the land.

Partnerships and Consultation

The department represents Tallcree’s interests in discussions with governments, industry, and environmental agencies. We take part in consultation processes to ensure any development or outside activity respects our rights, our resources, and our cultural values. Companies and organizations working in our territory can find information on permitting, land access, and request forms through our office.
