Kathy Auger's life has been defined by resilience, service, education, and an unwavering commitment to the people of Tallcree Tribal Government. Her contributions as an educator, community leader, and Councillor have left a lasting impact on generations of Tallcree members and will continue to inspire those who follow in her footsteps.
Kathy began her career with the Tallcree School Division in 1973 and served the Nation's students for nearly four decades until her retirement from education in 2012. Throughout those years, she worked in various capacities, but she is best known and remembered as a dedicated Cree language and culture teacher. Passionate about preserving language, culture, and identity, Kathy devoted her career to ensuring that young people remained connected to their Cree heritage.
In 1993, Kathy graduated from Maskwacis College with a Diploma as a Cree Language Instructor, further strengthening her ability to teach and promote the Cree language within the community. Her classroom extended far beyond academics; she taught respect, responsibility, culture, and pride. Because of the profound impact she had on her students, many of those former students—now adults with families of their own—continue to affectionately refer to her as "Mom" or "Kokum Kathy," a reflection of the love, guidance, and care she provided throughout her teaching career.
Known for being firm and maintaining high expectations, Kathy believed in discipline, hard work, and accountability. Yet behind her strict exterior was a tremendous heart. Alongside her husband, William Auger, with whom she shared over 50 years of marriage until his passing in 2021, Kathy opened her home and her heart to children in need. Together they formally adopted two children and lovingly raised two others, creating a home grounded in care, stability, and family values.
Kathy's personal journey is also one of remarkable strength and perseverance. She is a Residential School Survivor, having attended residential school for eight years after being taken there at the age of seven. Despite the hardships she endured, she emerged as a strong advocate for education, culture, and community wellness. Her life stands as a testament to resilience, healing, and the power of giving back.
In 2013, after a distinguished career in education, Kathy answered the call to leadership and was elected as a Councillor for Tallcree Tribal Government. In this role, she continued her lifelong commitment to serving the Nation and helping guide its future development.
Among the accomplishments she is most proud of is the construction and opening of the state-of-the-art Chief South Tallcree Elementary School in July 2021. As a lifelong educator, seeing a modern school facility built for future generations represented a dream realized and a significant investment in the Nation's children.
Kathy also takes great pride in the improvements to transportation infrastructure that have enhanced connectivity and safety within the community. The paving of Highway 88 between North and South Tallcree and the Nation's acquisition of its own graders have significantly improved road conditions and community accessibility.
Another achievement she celebrates is the Nation's growing economic strength, particularly the ownership of a hotel in Edmonton featuring 60 guest rooms, a restaurant, banquet facilities, and conference space. She views this as a symbol of Tallcree's vision, progress, and commitment to creating opportunities for future generations.
Throughout her life, Kathy has remained deeply committed to her community, culture, and family. Whether teaching students, mentoring young leaders, supporting families, or helping guide community development, she has always led with conviction, compassion, and determination.
Known for her frequent expression, "Heaven sakes!", Kathy became so well known for the phrase that even her brother affectionately nicknamed her after it. The saying has become a reflection of her personality—direct, genuine, caring, and unmistakably Kathy.
