Diabetes – Specialties

Other Specialties as arranged by outside clinics:

Mental Wellness

Annual Cultural Camps

Our Annual Cultural Camps have been held for the past three years and continue to bring the community together in a spirit of pride and connection. These gatherings celebrate our traditions, support knowledge sharing across generations, and strengthen cultural identity. Children, youth, adults, and Elders all take part in this important time on the land.

Cultural activities include:

  • Drum, drum bag, and rattle making
  • Moose meat drying, fish drying, and hide making
  • Traditional medicine teachings
  • Hand-games
  • Ceremonial drumming and dances

Cultural and Land-Based Programming

These programs bring together culture, community, and time on the land. Activities include traditional craft nights, such as beading and ribbon dress-making, dancing, and celebrating cultural holidays like Indigenous Peoples’ Day and Treaty Days. Land-based experiences, such as medicine gathering, trap-line outings, snowshoeing, and cross-country skiing, help promote physical health, cultural identity, and environmental care. These programs are especially meaningful for Tallcree youth and young adults.

Sports and Education

The annual Volleyball Camp focuses on building athletic skills while also supporting wellness and education. The youth take part in culturally grounded workshops that cover important topics such as online safety, sexual exploitation, and suicide prevention. These camps help our youth stay active, informed, and connected to their community.

Mental Health and Well-being

Tallcree has two mental health therapists available to support the growing need for emotional, psychological, and substance use care in the community. Their work focuses on healing, especially from intergenerational trauma related to colonization and the impacts of residential schools. One-on-one and family therapy sessions are offered at the North and South Health Centres, as well as in Tallcree’s primary and secondary schools.

Advocated Community Roles

With the above initiatives in place, there is a need for key staffing roles to sustain and advance these critical services:

Psychologists and Land-based Workers
To lead and grow child and youth wellness programs with a focus on mental health, land-based learning, and sports. These roles will help ensure programs are delivered consistently and with cultural sensitivity.

Psychologists and Land-based Workers
To support the social and emotional needs of children, youth, and families. Working closely with current mental health therapists, these staff will enhance the delivery of trauma-informed and culturally grounded mental health and substance use supports.

Child and Youth Community Outreach Assistants
To provide culturally sensitive planning and administrative support for child and youth wellness programs. This role also includes taking part in leadership and skills training led by the Health Director, Psychologist, and Land-based Worker.

Confidential Substance Misuse Counselling

  • One-on-one counselling
  • Support for concerned family members and others
  • Substance misuse assessments
  • Referrals to detox or treatment programs
  • Transportation to detox or treatment, arranged or provided when possible
  • Aftercare support
  • Participation in the National Addictions Awareness Week (NAAW) walk.
  • Community presentations on addiction and recovery
  • Mental health referrals or co-support when needed

Medical Transportation

Medical Transportation services fall under the umbrella of the North Peace Tribal Council (NPTC).

  • Staff help community members access medical appointments and services
  • Local medical taxis are scheduled and coordinated for in-town appointments
  • Referrals for out-of-area appointments, such as visits to specialists, are forwarded to NPTC

Traditional Healing Support

Tallcree members can access support for traditional healing through connections with First Nation Elders. This service honours cultural practices and supports holistic well-being.
